As Northern Europe’s largest and most state-of-the-art aquarium, situated just a few metres from the Øresund, the National Aquarium Denmark – Den Blå Planet has excellent potential to contribute to a better understanding of the secrets of the sea.
The aquarium’s experts therefore collaborate with both Danish and international scientists. The National Aquarium Denmark is also deeply committed to the fight against plastic pollution in the world’s oceans.
Water covers 71 per cent of the Earth’s surface – and oceans, rivers and lakes are filled with mysteries and new animal species just waiting to be discovered. However, even the animals we already know of have exciting secrets we can learn from. There are also animals and natural habitats that need our protection.
The National Aquarium Denmark is therefore deeply committed to science and nature conservancy. In fact, this is one of the aquarium’s primary missions.
The National Aquarium Denmark – Den Blå Planet’s science and nature conservancy efforts can be described in a single sentence: “We make a difference for life in water, and we expand our knowledge about life in water.”
The National Aquarium Denmark – Den Blå Planet exhibits fascinating creatures from all over the world and wants to make a difference. We want to generate new knowledge and communicate our findings to guests and everyone we come into contact with, thus setting the hearts of children and adults beating for the wonderful world of aquatic life.
We collaborate with researchers, institutions and NGOs from Denmark and abroad. The National Aquarium Denmark participates in a wide range of projects and contributes wherever our forces can be utilised to best and greatest effect.
Worldwide, especially in the Nordic region
Science and nature conservancy at the National Aquarium Denmark – Den Blå Planet has a global reach, spanning from Greenland to the coral reefs of the Tropics.
We participate in expeditions to remote destinations as well as in research and nature conservation projects in Danish waters. Furthermore, the National Aquarium Denmark – Den Blå Planet makes its nearly 500 different animal species from all over the world, state-of-the-art aquarium technology and highly trained staff available to researchers from Denmark and abroad.
As Denmark’s national aquarium, we will in future engage in research and nature conservancy specifically in Denmark. At the same time, however, we view Denmark as one part of a bigger whole. Our broader focus is therefore on the Nordic region, including the Arctic regions, with a special emphasis on life under the sea. We look forward to generating new knowledge and communicating about the beautiful and fascinating natural habitats in our part of the world.
Science is at the heart of everything we do
At the National Aquarium Denmark – Den Blå Planet, how we care for the animals and what we teach and disseminate are solidly founded in science.
We work to attract interesting projects in collaboration with scientists, institutions and NGOs, and we seek financial support from private and public foundations which, like the National Aquarium Denmark itself, are focused on generating new knowledge and protecting the wonderful world of aquatic life.
