The leafy seadragon is one of the most distinctive fish at the National Aquarium Denmark – Den Blå Planet. But even though it may seem odd, it is perfectly designed. Its leaf-like body serves as camouflage, keeping it hidden from both prey and predators. However, it is not an easy creature to care for. The leafy seadragon is extremely sensitive, and getting it to thrive and produce young is a challenge.
“The Leafy seadragon, behaviour, breeding and aquarium habitat design” research project is the first scientific behavioural study of the leafy seadragon in captivity. By observing and describing the leafy seadragon’s behaviour, we can learn more about the creature’s habits and reactions. This will make it easier to interpret the creature’s behaviour and help us to optimise the design of its aquarium habitat.
The results of the behavioural study will be shared with public aquariums all over the world, helping to ensure that the leafy seadragon thrives better in captivity and hopefully creating better conditions for breeding this fascinating fish.
