The Watermelon Pleco is closely related to the other Royal Plecos (Panaque). But this subspecies has blothes, different teeth, head shape and behavior. It was described in February 2020.

Grows slowly

This species grow extremely slowly. From 2014-2020 our fish here on the Blue Planet has only grown about 2-3 cm, which is the natural growth rate for this species.
